Third Grade
Language Arts: Learning to read and write is the basis for all learning. At Third grade the aim is to develop the child’s ability to express him/herself in fluent, confident and accurate English within an integrated program of speaking and listening, reading and writing. Teachers will encourage children to develop an enjoyment of language and literature, thus acquiring the proper skills to become lifelong readers and writers, such as self-selection of books, and self-monitoring to correct errors when reading and writing. Third graders are expected to listen to and write about a variety of literary forms, such as stories and poems, and a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres. Children are expected to discuss various literary and nonliterary elements, such as characters, setting, theme, main idea and supporting details, summarizing, paraphrasing, inference, and cause-effect relationship, relate experiences, and retell stories.

Oral Communication will emphasize on the ability to read and spell common sight words. Written expression will work with the different elements of writing styles, such as audience awareness, voice, and use of descriptive language. Specific grammar skills will include: capitalization, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, tenses, and identifying proper nouns, comparative and superlative adjectives, present/past tense verbs, adverbs, prepositions, articles, conjunctions, and pronouns. Students will be started on cursive writing. Spelling skills will focus on studying high frequency words, sight words, letter sound relationships, and specific spelling patterns.

Mathematics: Through Cupeyville School’s Math program, students will become confident and competent mathematical problem-solvers. Students will be able to compute and have deep conceptual understanding of numbers and think critically. Third grade curriculum focuses on the understanding of multiplication and division of whole numbers. They will also construct and analyze various types of graphs and use them to solve problems.

Science: Third Grade Science is a program designed to present science concepts in the context of real-life places and applications. Science course will focus on teaching about interactions, relationships, relative motion, and cause and effect. Students will study the movement of the Earth and the Moon, plants and animal interactions, Earth’s lands and resources, cycles of Earth, matter, energy, and sources. Second Grade Science program will also provide opportunities for all students to experience many things and conduct hands-on science investigations in which student inquiry is an important goal.

Social Studies: Third grade Social Studies educational program focuses on exploring the concept of community, learning about the development of cultures, and systems of governance. While the primary focus is on the local community, students will also learn more about the larger worlds.
