Sixth Grade
Language Arts: Learning to read and write is the basis for all learning. At Sixth grade level, the aim is to develop the child’s ability to express him/herself in fluent, confident and accurate English within an integrated program of speaking and listening, reading and writing. Sixth graders are expected to show an awareness of the potential of oral language. They will use a wide range of vocabulary and complex sentences to clearly express and explain their thought, needs, feelings, opinions, and ideas, as well as to inform, entertain, and influence others. Reading skills will pursue the ability to discuss and reflect on what has been read, talk about character motivations, elements of poetry/plays/novels, fiction and nonfiction, and analyze details of plot and characterization. Written expression will continue reinforcing correct cursive letter formation, adequate spacing, proportion, legibility, and neatness. Specific grammar skills will include: parts of speech, capitalization, present/past/future tense verbs, punctuation marks, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, subjects and predicates, adverbs, and prepositions.

Mathematics: Through Cupeyville School’s Math program, students will become confident and competent mathematical problem-solvers. Students will be able to compute and have deep conceptual understanding of numbers and think critically. Sixth grade educational program will focus on mastering the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers, positive rational numbers, positive decimals, and positive and negative integers. Students will find prime factorization, lest common multiples, and greatest common factors. Sixth graders will solve equations involving two operations and a single variable. They will analyze, draw conclusions, and make predictions based upon data and apply basic concepts of probability.

Science: Sixth grade science is a program designed to teach life science, physical science, earth science, and human body. Specific topics include scientific method, measurements, plant and animal life, classification of living organisms, properties of matter, motion, energy, and human growth and development. Each content area is enriched with a variety of activities for hands-on, minds-on types of learning experiences.

Social Studies: Sixth grade Social Studies program goes back to the dawn of civilizations and explores how humans evolved and gradually settled down to build civilizations. By studying Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Asia and the Americas, Western, and Eastern civilization, students will begin to understand the complexity of a society, place events in a chronological framework, and make comparison and contrast between them.

Spanish: El programa de español aspira a que el estudiante que cursa el sexto grado utilice su lengua materna adecuadamente y con fluidez, desarrollando al máximo sus capacidades lingüísticas. Las destrezas de lenguaje a trabajarse son: grupos consonánticos, partes de una oración, singulares y plurales, clases de sustantivos, artículos, signos de puntuación, sílabas tónicas y divisiones silábicas, reglas de acentuación, verbos y tiempos verbales, sufijos y prefijos, palabras primitivas y derivadas, aumentativos/diminutivos, tipo de adjetivos, puntos suspensivos, contracciones, sinónimos y antónimos, adverbios, uso del diccionario, parónimos, modificadores, preposiciones, conjunciones y homófonos/homógrafos. Se continúan reforzando las destrezas básicas de escritura. Las competencias de comprensión de lectura que se han de considerar son: adquirir y ampliar vocabulario, claves en contexto, elementos de un cuento, lenguaje figurado, hechos y opiniones, géneros literarios, idea principal y detalles, analogías, causa y efecto, hacer inferencias, simbolismos y moralejas, líneas cronológicas, lectura de un mapa, resumir, pensamiento crítico, orden de sucesos, propósito del autor, elementos de un poema y realizar predicciones.

Health: The Health program has an integral approach and it is based in the promotion of physical, mental-emotional health as general well being and maintenance, as well as a social-cultural and spiritual health, not just the prevention of diseases or illness. The overall objective of the program is to develop human beings with knowledge, skills, attitudes and habits, which will allow them to adopt and promote healthy lifestyles which will result in the prevention of illness and diseases for him/her as well as others.
