Second Grade
Language Arts: Learning to read and write is the basis for all learning. At Second grade the aim is to develop the child’s ability to express him/herself in fluent, confident and accurate English within an integrated program of speaking and listening, reading and writing. Teachers will encourage children to develop an enjoyment of language and literature, thus acquiring the proper skills to become lifelong readers and writers. Second graders are expected to discuss various literary and nonliterary elements, such as characters, setting, theme, main idea and supporting details, summarizing, inference, and cause-effect relationship.

Oral Communication will emphasize on common sound blends and the use of descriptive and complex language with increasing accuracy. Written expression will continue reinforcing correct lower and uppercase letter formation, adequate spacing, correct grip and letter size, writing within a defined space, and neatness. Specific grammar skills will include: writing whole sentences with capital letters, using the correct tense and punctuation marks, and identifying nouns, adjectives, singular and plurals, verbs, and pronouns. Spelling skills will focus on studying high frequency words, sight words, letter sound relationships, word families, and common spelling patterns.

Mathematics: Through Cupeyville School’s Math program, students will become confident and competent mathematical problem-solvers. Students will be able to compute and have deep conceptual understanding of numbers and think critically. Second grade curriculum extends the study of numbers and spatial sense, making measurements, and collect, organize, and display data. Second graders will also use graphs to answer questions and make summary statements and predictions based on their experiences.

Science: Second Grade Science is a program designed to present science concepts in the context of real-life places and applications. Science course will focus on the building and using science vocabulary appropriately, ask questions, find answers, and compare the known and unknown, through scientific investigations. Conduct investigations in cooperative groups and communicate the process and results of investigations to others. Second graders are expected to demonstrate an understanding and respect for all living things.

Social Studies: Second grade Social Studies program introduces, develops, and reinforces appreciation and awareness of the world and its people. The course will build up on curricular contents such as: understanding the need of rules, importance of national holidays and celebrations, voting and democratic processes, positive examples of citizenship, friendship, and membership in a group, means of communication, and transportation. Second graders will also be introduced to exploring the demographic social and cultural life of Puerto Rico.

Spanish: El programa de español aspira a que el estudiante que cursa el segundo grado utilice su lengua materna adecuadamente y con fluidez, desarrollando al máximo sus capacidades lingüísticas. Las destrezas de lenguaje a trabajarse son: grupos consonánticos, orden alfabético, frases y oraciones, familias de palabras, clases de oraciones, singulares y plurales, clases de sustantivos, singulares y plurales, artículos, signos de puntuación, sílabas tónicas y divisiones silábicas, verbos y tiempos verbales, tipos de sílabas, palabras compuestas y onomatopéyicas, gentilicios y diminutivos. Se continúan reforzando las destrezas básicas de escritura. Las competencias de comprensión de lectura que se han de considerar son: adquirir y ampliar vocabulario, identificar aspectos de un cuento, idea principal y detalles, causa y efecto, hacer inferencias, resumir, orden de sucesos, propósito del autor y realizar predicciones.
